Abel Dijkstra (Amsterdam, Netherlands,1998) is a visual storyteller and funny. He makes comics and self-publishes a magazine called Lovely. It’s the most contemporary comics magazine and it’s cool and free (not free of charge but free in spirit).

Abel sees comics as truly a magical way to freeze time and put feelings and invisible things into a reading experience. He’s not bound to a single style but you cannot escape his presence in all his work. You can feel and see and smell that it’s Abel Dijkstra, or Abel or Abelknabel as he sometimes likes to call himself. He currently lives and works in Zwolle: the soon to be capital of Dutch comics.

Albina Kolesnichenko woont en werkt in Chernihiv, in het noorden van Oekraïne. Sociale thema’s zijn altijd belangrijk voor haar geweest, omdat ze ervan overtuigd is dat illustraties een manier zijn om complexe onderwerpen aan te kaarten. Voor de oorlog werkte ze vooral als illustrator van kinderboeken, naast commercieel werk. Sinds het begin van de oorlog zet ze haar werk in om het pleidooi van haar land te ondersteunen.

Anna Paßlick’s original interest in comics awoke really late. Even though she always loved drawing, she didn’t read comics as a kid and only found them a couple of years ago when she was a teacher in social anthropology at the university. Today, she is super curious to explore social and political questions with her comics and tries to render complex information more accessible in non-fiction comics, while also exploring what the world might look like otherwise.

Currently, she is working for the first time on a longer fictional story that tells a story of grief and loss, but also intergenerational friendship between the two lesbian women Odelie (in her 60s) and Greg (in her 30s). The story is very close to her heart and she is super happy to work on it, also, because the research process for it has already brought a lot of new connections into her life and she thinks, in the end, the reason why she makes comics is because she loves the way that people can connect over and through stories.

Arezoo Moradi (Teheran, 1984) werkte als journalist voor kranten, tijdschriften en online magazines in Iran,en is vandaag verhalenverteller. Zij zoekt elke dag een nieuw verhaal achter een gesloten deur.

Sebastiaan de Ruiter (Schiedam, 1968) volgde de opleiding Beeld en Media technologie in Utrecht en was 15 jaar werkzaam als videogame designer, pixel junk, Flash Programmeur, reclametekenaar en animator. De laatste tijd gooit hij het op de autonome toer als illustrator en striptekenaar. Met de stad Rotterdam in gedachten schetst hij in zijn illustratieve series een komisch beeld van de horeca.

Baschz Leeft is a Rotterdam-based visual artist, designer, maker and curator. His work spans various media, combining analog and digital techniques to create dynamic designs, drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures, animations, and interactive art. Together with Wilco he has been the driving force behind the SWAP printswap for over 13 years. He is teaming up with Cross Comix to organise editions of SWAP at Cross Comix.

Beau Zwart (25) had an early introduction to music, learning classical piano throughout his childhood based in Rotterdam. Amazed by the possibilities of the works of classical composers from older generations he started to write his own compositions. In his teenage years he discovered jazz and electronic music and implemented these worlds in his compositions, but also in performances and DJ-sets.

Today, Beau is a producer, performer, DJ and film composer. He graduated the bachelor in music and technology at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht in 2019. He released music via national and international recordlabels like INI Movement, Fluid Funk, Midnight Riot Records and Beau De Toilette. He performed at festivals like Noorderslag, Grasnapolsky and North Sea RT and has a monthly radioshow at Operator Radio named BZ radio.

Bob Op ’t Land (1992) is illustrator en stripmaker. Hij is werkzaam en woonachtig in Deventer met zijn vriendin en twee katten. Hij houdt van vroeg opstaan en nieuwe schetsboeken. Hij houdt niet van op de foto gaan. Sinds 2020 tekent hij autobiografische (gag)strips, die hij in eigen beheer publiceert in zijn one-man-anthology ‘Plumbum’. Van ‘Plumbum’ zijn inmiddels drie delen verschenen.

Werk van Bob verscheen onder andere in de Zone 5300, Spirou (BE) en Métal Hurlant (FR). Momenteel tekent hij aan zijn eerste graphic novel, ‘Honingzoet’, over (zijn) leven met Type 1 Diabetes.

Bobby de Groot (1974) is illustrator en animatiefilmer. Al jaren werkt hij aan ‘Onder de Nederlandse bergen’, een serie magisch-realistische tekeningen die laten zien dat er in de schaduw van het pragmatische Nederland een wereld van mythische wezens schuilgaat. Gedetaillerde tekeningen tonen zeldzame momenten waarop deze twee werelden elkaar kruisen. Daarnaast geeft hij al 23 jaar les in animatie aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.

Boris Peeters (Venray, 1974) is een Nederlands striptekenaar en een lid van striptekencollectief Lamelos.

Boy Akkerman is de schepper van verschillende superhelden, zoals Captain Ultimate en Captain Roffa. Ook in zijn illustratiewerk figureren de nodige superhelden, bekende en onbekende. Hij komt vertellen wat hem zo aanspreekt in het fenomeen van de superheld. En legt natuurlijk uit hoe je dat doet, een superheld op papier zetten.

Bruno Ferro Xavier da Silva (1977) werd geboren in Lissabon, uit een Kaapverdiaanse moeder en Angolese vader en groeide op in Rotterdam. Hij is bassist, componist en visueel kunstenaar.

Buro Rococo is een collectief van illustratoren Yoko Heiligers en Nino Maissouradze waarin illustratie en performance samenkomen in mobiele tekenacts. Ze kenmerken zich door lichtheid, het speelse en het kleine binnen een verfijnde, intieme sfeer.

Zij laten je ervaren écht ‘gezien’ en gewaardeerd te worden om wie je bent. Door plaats te nemen voor de loketten, in de stoel, op het koffertje of onder de bol, krijg je een ter plekke geïmproviseerde ervaring en op maat gemaakte tekening.

De tekenacts van Buro Rococo zijn onder andere te zien geweest op Zwarte Cross, in het Groninger Museum, op de middenstip van het AZ Stadion, op het LINDA.Festival, tijdens Museumnacht010 en op OEROL Terschelling.

Caterina is a freelance creative with a background in illustration and graphic design. She cultivate her passion by leading different art workshops both in the Netherlands and her native Italy. Caterina has collaborated with Cross Comix since 2023, managing workshops and contributing to the Treviso Comic Book Festival since 2017 as board member.

Celestine Kronberger (he/they) is a comic artist and illustrator based in Rotterdam. For them, comics are a lens through which they view the world—a way to make sense of a vast whole through small fragments and life’s vignettes. By looking closely, they aim to uncover truths, foster understanding, and learn through the practice of re-examining and re-contextualizing.

They believe comics create a unique space for reflection, which is why their work often centers on personal and social themes. Through this medium, they aim to invite readers into a space where they can reflect on their own experiences, offering a framework that allows them to navigate the story at their own pace.

Christian Jongeneel stopped drawing comics when he found out he was better at writing. He published two novels, a book on the philosophy of science and thousands of articles in newspapers and magazines.

He returned to the world of comics as the managing director of Cross Comix. Together with Gwen Stok he published a poetic graphic novel about the Dutch colonial past in Indonesia, called In iedere vezel. He also runs two other cultural organizations, International Story Station Rotterdam and Letterhaven.

Cristóbal Schmal (Arica, Chile, 1977) is a freelance visual artist. Coming from graphic design he worked for different studios in Barcelona for 7 years before fully shifting his focus to his passion illustration when moving to Berlin in 2008. Since then he works for different clients and media such as The New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Greenpeace, Lufthansa, Taschen amongst others, switching between digital and analogue techniques.

Besides these commissions he develops free artwork. His latest collage series is inspired by his roots, tracing lines across varying ancient Andean cultures. Cristóbal explores through his practice their concept of time, life and death, reinterpreting signs and rituals of faith, forces of nature and fragility of human life.

Since October 2022 he has been teaching the online drawing course Drawing Workout where he offers a space for reflection, work and experimentation around creative processes.

Daan Timmer is een illustrator met een strakke lijn waarin ook Marvelhelden als de Silver Surfer tot hun recht komen. Zoals alle makers in dit blok komt hij uit Rotterdam, dat zomaar de superheldenhoofdstad van Nederland zou kunnen zijn.

Dace Satre Sietina is een kunstenaar en educator, afgestudeerd aan de Willem de Kooning Academie (WDKA) in Rotterdam, met een specialisatie in illustratie en schilderen. Ze heeft haar creatieve talenten toegepast bij het maken van stripverhalen voor zowel nationale als internationale boeken en magazines, en haar illustraties zijn verschenen in de boekenbijlage van NRC Handelsblad.

Dace’s werk heeft haar naar Graz en Helsinki gebracht, waar ze als artist in residence heeft geëxposeerd tijdens toonaangevende comic festivals. Na een operatieve ingreep aan haar tekenhand moest Dace helaas het tekenen opgeven, maar haar passie voor kunst blijft onverminderd. Ze richt zich nu op het bedenken en begeleiden van kunstprojecten die maatschappelijke thema’s verkennen, zoals citizen science rond microplastics en de integratie van vluchtelingen door middel van visuele communicatie.

Momenteel werkt Dace ook als museum- en workshopdocent in het Rijksmuseum, waar ze haar liefde voor kunst en geschiedenis deelt met een breed publiek. Ondanks de tegenslagen koestert ze warme herinneringen aan haar tijd als comic tekenaar en heeft ze een diepe bewondering voor haar collega’s in het vak.

Danibal (Daniel Hentschel) is muzikant en cartoonist. Van 4-28 september 2024 is een expositie van 25 jaar werk te zien in het Utrechtse stadhuis.

Danyl Shtangeev is afkomstig uit Kharkiv, in het noordoosten van Oekraïne. Hij is de auteur van verschillende strips, die verschenen in tijdschriften en anthologieën. Daarnaast is hij de art director van visualisatiestudio Colotune. Voor zijn strips werkt hij samen met Borys Filonenko, die onder andere twee maal co-curator was van het Oekraïense paviljoen tijdens de Biënnale in Venetië.

Dario van Vree is zelfstandig animator én medeoprichter van animatiestudio Studio Pupil, dat momenteel een verfilming van Maaike Hartjes’ burn-out dagboek onder handen heeft. Zijn korte film Tabook bereikte veertig filmfestivals wereldwijd. Daarnaast geeft hij les aan de Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam.

Dasha Starostin is a passionate advocate for independent publishing and experimental visual storytelling. She curates a zine kiosk, scouting for emerging talent at international festivals during her travels. As a co-founder of the risograph Studio Vlinderboom, she fosters creativity and collaboration in printmaking.

Additionally, she teaches in the Publication Station at Willem de Kooning Academy, sharing her expertise with the next generation of artists. As an illustrator, Dasha both creates and publishes her own zines as well as those of others, championing diverse voices in the publishing landscape.
